Studies at Wadi Gawasis

Wadi Gawasis empties into the Red Sea approximately 10 kilometers south of  Safaga, Egypt.  It was from here that the Pharaohs of Egypt's Middle Kingdom launched expeditions by sea to the fabled land of Punt.  When the ships returned, the ancient Egyptians disassembled them and hid their parts in caves.  The ship timbers, ropes, stone anchors and shipping boxes lay undisturbed until rediscovered in 2004.   The Dash Foundation conducted remote sensing studies here in 2006 and 2007, identifying, among other things, the shoreline of the ancient harbor.
